The High Meadow, Spring

High Meadow, Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve, Santa Clara County, CA, 3/31/2009

On the afternoon previous to the one seen here, a friend of mine and I hiked the High Meadow Trail of Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve past this very spot. Upon seeing this view, I immediately realized how well suited it was for a panoramic format. I returned the following day and made this photograph, my first attempt at a panorama. I waited for the sun to sink just low enough in the sky to shade the area on the trail where I was standing and strike the fresh springtime grass at a very low angle, bringing out all the detail. A few months later in the year, this scene looks entirely different because the grass turns completely brown! The 3,800 acre Rancho San Antonio is located in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains by the town of Los Altos Hills, CA.
