Tangled Wood

Lower Meadow Trail, Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve, Santa Clara County, CA, 2/5/2018

Here is a dead and fallen California bay tree by Lower Meadow Trail in Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve in California’s Santa Clara County. My initial attempt at this photograph was made a couple of months before this color version: my second entry in the Facebook 7-day black and white photo challenge. The rules were seven days, seven black and white photographs of my life, no photos of people, no explanations. My friends loved this one! I frequently pass this spot near my home during a favorite hike. Hundreds of people walk and run past here every day, yet I never notice anyone stop to admire this gorgeously tangled wood. To my eyes, this scene is a fantastic natural sculpture garden. Captivated by how intricate and finely detailed the tree’s thousands of branches are and encouraged by the warm reception my black and white snapshot received, I resolved to preserve this view in a high-quality color photograph.
