Goldfields Meadow

155th Street W & W Avenue D-15, Fairmont, Antelope Valley, Los Angeles County, CA, 3/29/2017

In spring of 2017, I visited Southern California’s Antelope Valley to enjoy the blossoming wildflowers. The previous winter's heavy rains during an extended drought had given rise to a rare super bloom! I discovered this lovely view looking west from Broad Canyon at the north foot of Fairmont Butte and photographed the scene at sunrise. This high desert meadow is covered with tiny yellow daisies known as goldfields (Lasthenia glabrata). The orange flowers among the sagebrush are California poppies (Eschscholzia californica). This was an extraordinary moment; usually this terrain is barren and lifeless. Sawmill Mountain and Liebre Mountain are in the distance at left. Frazier Mountain and Tecuya Mountain are right of center.
