North boundary, Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve SNR, Los Angeles County, CA, 4/8/2008
In spring of 2008 I spent several days exploring and photographing the wildflowers at the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve in Los Angeles County, CA. Here is the view one afternoon at the north boundary of the park. The wind was very strong, making the photography challenging. But with the winds came dramatic clouds like the ones seen here over the distant rolling hills! The orange flowers are California poppies or Eschscholzia californica, also known as flame flower and copa de oro (cup of gold). The tiny yellow daisies are goldfields or Lasthenia glabrata. This grassland area is at an elevation ranging from 2,600 to 3,000 feet above sea level in the Mojave Desert climate zone.
