El Tovar Hotel, Grand Canyon National Park, AZ, 12/13/2009
A heavy and windy early winter snowstorm had been blanketing the south rim of the Grand Canyon all morning and afternoon of this December day, my first day there. In mid-afternoon, the snowfall suddenly diminished and the sky lightened. Minutes later, the sun fully emerged! I grabbed my camera equipment and made this panorama from just outside the El Tovar Hotel. This view shows the retreating snowstorm clouds over the canyon from Maricopa Point at left to Grandeur Point at right. The red rock formation jutting further into the canyon from Maricopa Point is known as The Battleship. The deep channel immediately to the right forms the waterway for Garden Creek, leading to Indian Garden - made visible by the sunlit olive-green trees. They're about 3,100 feet lower in elevation than the camera!
