Ancient Oaks Trail, Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve, San Mateo County, CA, 6/30/2014
Situated atop the coastal Santa Cruz Mountain Range on California’s San Francisco Peninsula is Russian Ridge. Walking there along Ancient Oaks Trail at nightfall one spring, I photographed the sunset. We are looking west toward the towns of La Honda and San Gregorio; Mindego Hill is at far left. On a clear evening, this view would feature the Pacific Ocean in the distance, but instead, we see the landscape out to the horizon submerged beneath a dreamlike sea of fog.
