White Barn and Mt. Hamilton

Washburn Trail, Joseph D. Grant County Park, Santa Clara County, CA, 2/22/2007

On this winter day, the sky was beautiful with dramatic clouds. I headed to my beloved Joseph D. Grant County Park and decided to hike the Washburn Trail. I had just started walking when I was struck by the perfection of this scene, with the fence leading to White Barn on the hill and snowcapped Mt. Hamilton in the background. Thanks to the blue sky, dramatic clouds, and crisp lighting this photo conveys the cool fresh air and sense of unlimited possibilities I felt at that moment! Grant Park is located in Halls Valley, just east of San Jose, CA. Before 1942, the park was a ranch owned by Joseph D. Grant, the son of a founder of Murphy, Grant, & Company, a dry goods store that sold supplies to gold miners. Joseph Grant entertained guests at his ranch such as Leland Stanford and Herbert Hoover. Hoover stayed at the ranch for a month after his election loss to Franklin Roosevelt.
