Lundy Lake Road, Lundy Canyon, Mono County, CA, 10/22/2009
On my first visit to Lundy Canyon I was immediately impressed by this stunning view of golden aspens at the height of their autumn splendor, with Lundy Lake and snowcapped mountains in the background. The Sierra had recently been dusted by an early snowstorm, and I was fortunate to find a scene with both the snow and autumn colors. This is an example of an inevitable photograph, since I spotted the scene right from Lundy Lake Road and instantly knew I must capture it! Lundy Lake is about 7,800 feet above sea level. The view is from the north shore of the lake looking southwest, with the northern flank of Tioga Crest at far left. Above the trees at far right is the craggy red southern flank of Mt. Olsen. The distant snowcapped mountains at center are the ridge connecting North Peak with Shepherd Crest. Hidden behind the trees at the end of the lake is the defunct community Lundy (formerly Mill Creek). It was named after W. J. Lundy who operated a sawmill near the lake. The sawmill was a major timber producer for the nearby gold mining town of Bodie (now a famous ghost town).
