Coast Live Oak, Twilight

High Meadow Trail, Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve, Santa Clara County, CA, 1/15/2018

In September of 2017, I began a daily hiking regimen in a wooded park near my home, and I soon discovered beautiful scenes I looked forward to admiring along the way. This is a photograph of one of those places: a view along the trail by a handsome old California live oak tree (Quercus agrifolia). The coast live oak is the only California native oak that thrives in a coastal environment; although it is rarely found immediately by the shore, it enjoys the mild winter and summer climate afforded by ocean proximity. Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve is located in the foothills of the coastal Santa Cruz Mountains near Los Altos Hills, CA.
