Diaphanous Dormancy

Rogue Valley Trail, Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve, Santa Clara County, CA, 12/12/2014

Here is a dormant California buckeye tree at the base of a hill near my home, with some green coyote bush in front. This scene is right alongside a trail in Rogue Valley where there are always rabbits, and where hundreds of people go walking and running every day, yet I never see anyone stop to admire the tree. In late autumn and winter I'm always captivated by how intricate and finely detailed the tree's thousands of branches are, bare of any leaves. To my eyes, this is a fantastic sculpture, a natural wonder.
