The White Barn

Washburn Trail, Joseph D. Grant County Park, Santa Clara County, CA, 3/2/2006

A key to achieving better than ordinary photographs of places is to begin by not seeing those places as ordinary. Perhaps to some people nothing could be more humdrum and unworthy of artistic attention than an old barn. For me - having grown up in New York City - there is nothing mundane and everyday about an old barn in a grassy valley, especially on a day like this one. Observing a nice mix of clouds in the sky on this late winter day, I traveled to Joseph Grant County Park hoping to make some beautiful photos of pastoral scenes. This is the look of winter in much of California; you can spot it by all the green! I'll never forget how excited and pleased I was with the perfection of the weather and lighting that greeted me at the park; everywhere I turned I saw paradise! With great fun and ease I brought home a number of fine photographs, exactly the kind I had hoped for. Here is one of the first I made upon arriving there that day. The 9,560 acre Joseph D. Grant County Park is located in Halls Valley, just east of San Jose, CA.
